Gather round the campfire PDF Print E-mail

campfire.jpgHowdy there partners.  I invite you to gather round the old campfire to hear me spin some exciting tales.  No, we haven't gone Western here at GermAware, just trying to figure out a way to pull together a collection of seemingly unrelated points into a single, cohesive post.  Ah forget it, here are a few points that I have been collecting over the weekend and wanted to subject you to now that the work week has started once again:

  • Children in the U.S. gathered across many venues to celebrate the 4th of July.  Aside from adults being subjected to countless "when are the fireworks starting" questions, many kiddies embarked on the yearly right of passage involving sparklers.  With fireworks outlawed in most localities for the typical citizen, these flaming poles are a poor substitute to the firecrackers, bottle rockets and smoking snakes most of us grew up with.  It remains a mystery to many how a rod which burns at over 2000 F can be considered safe for children.  Just to put it in perspective, common welding rods melt at a temperature of 1200 F.
  • Why do fireworks need to start so late anyway.  Yes, it has to be dark in order to see them well, however how dark does it really need to be.  In my area of the country, fireworks seem to be starting later and later each year.  This year it was almost 10 p.m. by the time they started.  Perhaps early morning would be better.  Just throwing it out there.
  • WALL-E had a good bit of social commentary for being a kids movie.  The long-term affects of accumulating waste, promoting recycling, dependence on machines and the list goes on.  I am all for well intentioned family entertainment that has a message, however WALL-E was a bit over the top.  It was a good movie, don't get me wrong.  It's just when did children's movies need to start being bully pulpits.  Let the kids have some fun without trying to inject all these "message" into them.

Well the fire is starting to burn low my friends and the coyotes are starting to howl.  Time we started moseying towards our virtual homes.  Make sure to get to your local stores to buy plenty of sparklers for our next gathering, we have some cattle that needs branding.  Oh wait, we can't brand cattle any more, that latest children's movie which is only shown after 10 p.m. disapproves of branding.  Happy trails everyone.
